Map of Water District

Fálkafoss waterfall is in Miðfjarðará right above where it meets Litla-Kverká. The waterfall draws its name (Falcon Waterfall) from falcons who have nested close to the water fall for a long time. The waterfall is approx. 4 km. from the river mouth. The salmon swims up to Fálkafoss waterfall and stops there. It also swims up Litla-Kverká river. There the salmon stops at the so-called Brúarfoss waterfall. Beneath Brúarfoss is Brúarhylur pool, a horseshoe-like hunting spot, surrounded with cliffs and quite deep.

The salmon can't jump Fálkafoss today, but it is very close. Plans have been discussed for a long time to help the salmon jump the waterfall. Each year grown salmons are carried above the waterfall in salmon chests, to help them spawn in areas the salmon can't reach on its own. From there, the salmon can swim for two more kilometers to the next waterfall, Bæjarfoss (also callsed Heimafoss). The salmon is very close to be able to jump the waterfall and in the opinion of experts would be quite easy to solve. The next waterfall just above is called Sniðfoss, most likely not easy for the salmon to jump, but again could easily be made possible for the salmon with some amendments to the waterfall. The next waterfall thereafter is simply called The 4th Waterfall. The salmon will most likely not be able to jump it. The distance from Fálkafoss to the 4th Waterfall is about 4 km. Should Fálkafoss be made accessible for the salmon, the hunting area would therefore double in length without much effort. There are many beautiful hunting spots above Fálkafoss, waiting to be made accessible. Here below is a map showing the water district.

Here below is an older older map of the area, especially the area above Fálkafoss waterfall, although not quite accurate regarding distances between waterfalls. As can be seen, the 4th waterfall is almost 200 meters above sea level. If the salmon jumps the 4th Waterfall, there will be no particular obstacles in its path after that. It could even swim up Þverfellslækur creek, which runs from Þverfellsvatn lake.
